I protagonisti? Neanche Barbie.
Contentious, provocative, esagerate: these are just few adjectives to describe Tyler Shields’ personality. This young man with unknown age, is an American talented artist who started his career on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/tylershields) and became famous and acclaimed by music and series stars. I’m talking about photography and video making. Cruel shoots in bright colors about dirty arguments (yes, dears, it’s about violence, sex, drugs and rock n’roll!)painted with thin irony, sad resignation or insane madness. Every single shoot and every single photogram is extremely real but pervaded by sensuality. The protagonists? Here they are: Kyle XY, Sylar, Marissa Cooper, the Glee club; Rebecca Harper, My Chemical Romance, Claire the cheerleader that must be saved, even Barbie. Yes, his last work is about the famous sweet blonde doll. Oh, no, forget doctor Barbie and her pets. Forget Barbie and her beloved Ken drinking an alcohl-free fruit cocktail in their Malibu house. No, no. Take Barbie, undress her, don’t take off her high heels, bind her body with a vinyl black tape and slap her pretty face: oh yeah, Shields turned your favorite playfellow into an audacious bondage bitch. Then he made her kiss another girl (naked, as well!), blow cocaine, get drunk because of a bottle of Jack Daniels. At best Barbie didn’t cross the line, at worst, well, she actually bled. Ehi, don’t make it bad! Nobody’s perfect. Neither Barbie.
Certainly, Shields loves to provoke with his shoots. The cold, artificial and almost clinic light shows (usually without dresses, as you notice!) every human weakness and turns it into a case to study remotely. It seems he wants a spectator, but a remote and not involved one. He puts his subjects under a huge, blinding spotlight and let them act with a spiteful attitude. But he doesn’t expect a reaction.
In the same way his videos don’t make you a part of them, they seems dioramas protected by a glass. Like art in a museum. You can watch, but you can’t touch. No dialogues, but music and repeated actions make these videos be profane icons to loop until the spectator has a strong reaction. And more than once some spectators had this kind of reaction: some Shields’ works are famous (like the official video for the song “Ride” by Cary Brothers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3kALKf9oUY&ob=av2e), but the most famous of all is the Heather Morris’ (actress and dancer) photo shoot. The pictures show the girl beaten and raped by an unknown “hand”. Of course, it was so scandalous that Shields had to apologize and donate some of these pictures for the campaign against domestic abuse.
Devi schierarti. O con il bianco o con il nero.
In a fake prissy, but sinner inside, society like the American society, Shields is a sort of window open on the human darkest side (I was writing “hidden” but then I thought: c’mon, sex, drugs and excesses are our Country’s symbols in the world! So, is not that hidden!). Although a widespread disinhibition, all this stuff still embarrass people. Shields uses very bright colors to paint these scenes. Maybe the abuse of color contrast is a technical and stylistic choice for creating an aseptic and plasticized world. Maybe is for a symbolic annihilation of human being’s shades. While you’re watching a Shields’ work you don’t have to care about shades, because there aren’t. You need to rally around white or black.
